Machine learning is inching its way into modern avionics, but let’s be blunt: it’s far easier to build a clever neural controller in a lab than to certify one for an aircraft where human lives and military assets depend on deterministic behavior. If any ML engineer believes they can “convince” certification authorities with charts and accuracy metrics, they’re not ready for aerospace.

3. Hybrid Architectures: The Only Viable Path Today

The realistic middle ground is hybrid control. ML doesn’t command the aircraft directly; it proposes, and a certified layer vets.

Key components:

  • Verified Supervisor / Safety Filter: Ensures ML outputs stay within safe bounds (e.g., control barrier functions, reachability-based envelopes).
  • Runtime Monitors: Detect distribution shift, anomalous states, or deviations from certified safe behavior.
  • Formal/Statistical Verification Hybrid: Full formal verification of the ML model is impossible today, but bounded statistical guarantees + envelope verification can work.
  • Fallback Logic: When ML misbehaves, the system defaults to classical, certifiable control laws.

This architecture acknowledges the reality: ML is useful, but never fully trusted.

4. Military Context: Twice the Opportunity, Twice the Risk

Combat environments amplify everything:

  • Jamming and spoofing can manipulate inputs to ML-driven estimators.
  • Dynamic adversarial conditions push the aircraft outside any training distribution.
  • Electronic warfare (EW/JENGAL) environments create deceptive patterns that fool neural networks far more easily than classical observers.

The military wants autonomy, but ML-driven autonomy without robust adversarial hardening is suicidal. Certification here isn’t just a regulatory formality it’s battlefield survival.

5. The Path Forward (and It’s Not a Smooth One)

Achieving certifiable ML in avionics requires:

  • Interpretable ML architectures (e.g., neural ODEs, structured networks, symbolic-ML hybrids)
  • Online learning with guarantees, not open-ended adaptation
  • Rigorous robustness evaluation, including adversarial scenarios
  • Flight-tested safety envelopes tied to reachable-set verification
  • Standardization frameworks akin to DO-178C but ML-specific (which still barely exist)

Anyone trying to fast-track ML directly into flight control without these layers is setting up a future accident report.

Conclusion

ML can absolutely enhance future flight control — adaptive modeling, anomaly detection, and high-dimensional sensing are perfect fits. But without explainability, hard guarantees, and runtime protection, an ML-based controller becomes a certification nightmare and an operational liability.
